What We Treat

Who is a Candidate for hip surgery?

Surgery is recommended based on the patient's pain and disability, rather than age. Although most total hip replacement patients are between 50 and 80 years old, Dr. Max evaluates each patient individually.

Successful total hip replacement procedures have been performed on all age groups, from young adolescents with juvenile arthritis to elderly patients with degenerative arthritis.

Hip Arthritis

Osteoarthritis, a common form of arthritis due to aging, often affects individuals over 50 and those with a family history of arthritis. This condition occurs when the cartilage cushioning the hip bones wears away, causing the bones to rub together, resulting in pain and stiffness. Additionally, minor developmental differences in the hip during childhood can also induce or worsen osteoarthritis.

Hear From Past Patients Who Traveled
To Mexico For Their Hip Surgery

"My name is Sharon Whitehead, and I came from Calgary, Alberta, for a right hip replacement. I had always experienced severe pain on my left side as well, and we thought that fixing my right hip would alleviate the pain in my left leg. However, it didn't, and an MRI revealed that I needed emergency back surgery to address the issue on my left side. Dr. Max performed the surgeries, and I can't say enough great things about him and his entire team, including Paco and Jacky, among others. The facility is incredible; it didn't even feel like a hospital—more like a five-star hotel. I would recommend them to anyone. Thank you!”

"Dr. Max had time to get to know who I was and let me know who he was on a personal level. He explained everything in detail, from our first meeting, going through my X-rays and booking my pre-op and surgery in a very timely manner. Documentation of the entire event provided great backup to what was done. The CMQ Riviera Nayarit was excellent where I was in a large private room for two nights. The nursing care and the food was very good. His team has also taken very good care of me after the hospital stay, providing nursing and physio care at my place of residence. If you need a hip replacement, I highly recommend this team of caring people."

Total Hip Replacement

"I am an 87 year old man who had been unable to walk, without discomfort and a limp, for eight months. This resulted in significant muscle atrophy. In Canada and USA delays in adequate diagnosis helped to create this situation. I paid for a MRI of my hip joint and discovered that I desperately needed a left hip replacement.. From my initial telephone contact with Pulse as well as a three way conversation with Dr Max, the professionalism of everyone concerned has been impressive. I cannot speak highly enough of Dr Max's surgical skill, his empathy with the patient and his concern over ensuring a successful surgical outcome. It would be remiss not to include the hospital nursing staff, especially Jackie, who regularly visited me at my condo to change the dressing and the excellent physical therapist, Adriana, whose daily visits played an important part in my rapid recovery. Anyone requiring orthopedic surgery need look no further than Dr Max Grieg of Puerto Vallarta. In my opinion he is an outstanding surgeon and, unusual in his profession, a compassionate human being."

"I can not say enough about Dr. Max and his staff. He is very professional and yet almost like family to me. He came highly recommended, and I can see why. He cares about his patients and made contact with my wife during the procedure to let her know how I was doing, .This is caring. Thank you Dr.Max"

"I have been telling everyone that I had the best orthopedic doctor in the world! Dr. Max is a great listener and problem solver. We initially had over an hour's conversation, consultation in which he listened to the problems I was having and assured me that he could help. Upon arrival we met again and had an exam and new x-rays. 2 Days Later I had surgery on my right hip. Not only did I get a new hip but I had a say in the appliance used. Dr. Max isn't tied into one Product Company he can use the best products based on you and your lifestyle. Everything was orchestrated perfectly leading up to the surgery. The hospital was amazing! The nurses were kind and attentive. Great food! There's even a Starbucks on the ground floor. I had an ocean view and the room was huge. Dr. Max stayed with me in recovery and visited frequently to check on me. Physical therapy with Adriana started the day after and continued on for 10 sessions. Dr. Max's assistant, Jackie, made house calls to change my bandages every two to three days. I always felt supported and cared for. I paid one price for everything. No unexpected costs. Ryan sent and itinerary that was very detailed. Nothing is left out. I traveled home at about 2 weeks using a wheelchair option. I was only on a walker for 2 weeks and then transitioned to a cane for two more. Now I am back at work and walking a mile. I am just now at 6 weeks post-surgery. I had very little swelling or bruising. I can't say enough about the whole office and Pulse. I will be visiting again soon and will check in with Dr Max. Not because I need to but because I miss them."

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Body Ever Reject a Hip Replacement?

The body does not "reject" a hip replacement in the same way it might reject an organ transplant. However, complications can occur, such as infections, allergic reactions to implant materials, or the body's inflammatory response to wear particles from the implant. These issues are relatively rare and can often be managed with appropriate medical intervention. Regular follow-up with Dr. Max helps monitor the implant and address any concerns promptly.

Is Hip Surgery a High-Risk Surgery?

Hip surgery, including hip replacement, is generally considered safe and routine, but it does carry some risks. Potential complications include infection, blood clots, dislocation, implant loosening, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. However, advances in surgical techniques and post-operative care have significantly reduced these risks. Most patients experience successful outcomes and an improved quality of life. It's essential to discuss individual risk factors with your surgeon to ensure the best possible outcome.

What is the Success Rate of Hip Surgery?

The success rate of hip surgery, particularly hip replacement, is very high. Approximately 90-95% of patients experience significant pain relief and improved mobility. The implants typically last 15-20 years or longer, with many patients enjoying a better quality of life. Advances in surgical techniques and materials have contributed to these positive outcomes. Regular follow-up care and adherence to post-operative guidelines are essential for maintaining the success of the surgery.

Is Hip Surgery in Mexico Safe?

Yes, hip surgery in Mexico is generally safe. Many hospitals and clinics in Mexico meet international standards and are equipped with advanced medical technology. They often have highly skilled and experienced surgeons who have received international training. Additionally, many healthcare facilities in Mexico are accredited by reputable organizations, ensuring high-quality care. The country has a strong reputation for medical tourism, with many patients experiencing successful outcomes. It's important to research and choose a reputable facility and surgeon to ensure a safe and effective procedure.

Who is a candidate for hip replacement?

Candidates for hip replacement are typically individuals suffering from severe hip pain or stiffness due to arthritis, injury, or degenerative joint diseases. When non-surgical treatments such as medication, physical therapy, or injections no longer provide relief, doctors may recommend surgery. Candidates are often those whose quality of life is significantly impacted by limited mobility and pain.

What is the lifespan of a hip replacement?

The lifespan of modern hip replacements is generally between 15 to 20 years, though some can last longer with proper care and maintenance. Advancements in implant materials and surgical techniques have greatly improved their longevity. Over time, wear and tear on the artificial joint may require a revision surgery, especially in younger, more active patients.

How can I prepare for hip replacement surgery?

Preparation for hip replacement surgery includes medical evaluations, optimizing your overall health, and making necessary adjustments to your home for a smooth recovery. Patients should stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, before surgery and arrange for help with daily activities post-operation. Maintaining a healthy weight and exercising can also improve outcomes after surgery.

Can I have both hips replaced at the same time?

Yes, a bilateral hip replacement involves replacing both hips during the same surgery. This can be beneficial for patients with severe arthritis in both hips, as it reduces overall recovery time. However, it's a more intensive procedure with a longer initial recovery, so not all patients are candidates. Doctors typically assess your overall health before recommending simultaneous surgery.

Will I need a second hip replacement in the future?

While modern hip replacements can last 15-20 years or longer, the wear and tear of daily use, particularly in younger or more active patients, may eventually lead to the need for revision surgery. Revision surgeries are more complex and carry additional risks, but they are often successful in restoring function and relieving pain when needed.

Can hip replacement relieve leg pain?

Yes, hip replacement can effectively relieve pain that radiates from the hip into the leg, often caused by arthritis or joint degeneration. By replacing the damaged hip joint with a prosthesis, the surgery addresses the root cause of the pain. Patients typically notice significant improvements in their leg pain within weeks after surgery, though full recovery takes several months.

What should I bring to the hospital for hip replacement surgery?

Before your surgery, prepare a bag with comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, toiletries, and any necessary medical documents. Non-slip shoes, a robe, and supportive pillows can also be helpful for post-surgery comfort. You may also want to bring entertainment like a book or tablet to pass the time during your hospital stay. Don’t forget to arrange for someone to help you at home after discharge.

How Long After Hip Replacement Can You Walk?

What Can I Not Do After a Hip Replacement?

After a hip replacement, patients should avoid high-impact activities such as running and jumping, as well as heavy lifting and twisting movements. Activities like crossing legs, bending at the hip beyond 90 degrees, and sitting on low chairs should also be avoided to prevent dislocation of the new joint. It's important to follow your surgeon's specific guidelines and focus on low-impact exercises to maintain joint health and mobility.

How Long Are You on Bed Rest After a Hip Replacement?

Bed rest after a hip replacement is minimal. Most patients are encouraged to start moving and walking with assistance within a day or two after surgery. Prolonged bed rest is generally discouraged to reduce the risk of complications such as blood clots and to promote faster recovery. Early mobilization and physical therapy are crucial for optimal healing and regaining mobility.

After a hip replacement, avoid high-impact exercises such as running, jumping, and heavy weightlifting. Activities like deep squats, lunges, and sports involving twisting movements, such as basketball and soccer, should also be avoided to protect the new joint. How long will I stay in the hospital after hip replacement?

Most patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days following hip replacement surgery. This allows the medical team to monitor recovery and ensure that patients can walk with assistance and manage their pain before going home. Some patients may qualify for same-day discharge if their surgery is minimally invasive and they have a strong support system at home.

When can I drive after hip replacement surgery?

You can typically resume driving 4 to 6 weeks after surgery, but only once you are no longer taking strong pain medication and feel confident in your ability to control the vehicle. Before returning to driving, patients should be able to safely perform quick stops and turns without hesitation or discomfort. Always consult your surgeon before getting behind the wheel.

How should I sleep after hip replacement surgery?

For the first few weeks after hip replacement, it's recommended to sleep on your back with a pillow between your legs to maintain proper alignment. Avoid sleeping on your side, especially on the operated side, until your surgeon gives you the go-ahead. Proper sleeping posture helps reduce the risk of dislocating the new joint and promotes healing.

The time it takes to return to work depends on the type of job and your overall recovery progress. Patients with desk jobs may return to work within 4 to 6 weeks, while those with physically demanding jobs may need 3 months or longer. It's important to follow your surgeon's recommendations and gradually increase activity levels to ensure a successful recovery.
